She Stoops to Conquer (or The Mistakes
of a Night)"I know of no comedy for many years that has so
much exhilarated an audience, that has answered so much the great end of comedy in
making the audience merry."
Dr Johnson (1773)
This wonderful witty romp, Oliver Goldsmith's masterpiece, drives a coach and
four through the manners and conventions of 18th Century England.
Young Marlow is rich, handsome and single, but despite his infamous ability to charm a
barmaid, he's hopelessly bashful in the presence of a society lady.
His chances of impressing the beautiful Miss Kate Hardcastle are further jeopardised when
he is persuaded by the rascally Tony Lumpkin that her family home is in fact the local
inn. To the horror of her father, Marlow makes himself thoroughly comfortable and somehow
gets the idea that Kate is a serving girl...
